Frank H. Jellinek Jr. Tribute

"It is what it is" was one of the favorite sayings of this man who loved life and pursued work or play with eternal optimism, a warm heart and a down-to-earth can-do attitude. Frank H. Jellinek Jr., was a highly successful businessman as well as a dedicated and successful racer for almost four decades beginning in SCCA, IMSA, including a Camel Lights victory in the Daytona 24 Hours and for the past decade, vintage, often partnered with his good friend David Loring. Road America was his home track. With his death in January as a passenger in a private jet, racing lost another of its most enthusiastic and talented particpants. To his lovely wife Judy of 38 years, daughter Lauren, son Peter Max, and twin brother John, we offer our deepest sympathy. Frank had a stable of beautifully prepared cars, including an Austin-Healey 100-4, Porsche Speedster, Lotus 23, Chevron B19, Shadow DN8 F1, Lotus 19, and McLaren M8. He planned to campaign a full season in 2006 in Historic Grand Prix and Can-Am. Although Frank's death was and will remain a very sad tragedy, how he lived is what is truly remarkable. To Frank everything was possible. He embraced life with boundless enthusiasm, inspiration, and compassion.

Godspeed, Frank, from all your racing colleagues.

A memorial fund has also been established in Frank's honor supporting education and participation in the sports Frank loved the most: sailing, car racing, skiing, and biking. A special focus will be given to the needs of mentally and physically challenged children and adults.

On Sunday, Frank was honored by a gathering of friends, family, and race cars.

There were some tears, but more hugs and smiles and stories. And the friends
and family were surrounded by lots of kids, easily Frank's happiest legacy.

Before the Historic Grand Prix race, two of Frank's cars led the pace lap --
driven by Dave Vegher and son Peter Max -- as a symbolic farewell and salute.
