Avec cette première édition d’INFO GRAND PRIX, je suis heureux de vous présenter le programme sportif complet du Grand Prix du Canada 2004. Comme vous le constaterez, ce programme est taillé sur mesure pour l’amateur de sport automobile que vous êtes. En plus des séances d’essais, de qualifications et de la présentation de la 8e manche du championnat du monde de Formule 1, vous pourrez apprécier cette année à Montréal des courses annexes spectaculaires. Dès aujourd’hui, vous pouvez vous mettre en mode Grand Prix et goûter l’atmosphère survoltée de notre édition 2004.

L’histoire l’enseigne : au beau milieu du calendrier, le Grand Prix du Canada a souvent relancé le championnat du monde. Avec son tracé exigeant pour les pilotes comme pour leurs machines, le circuit Gilles-Villeneuve a produit au fil des ans plusieurs surprises. Bien que Michael Schumacher s’y sente fort à l’aise, les héros des dernières éditions ont aussi été Fernando Alonso (record du tour en 2003), Juan Pablo Montoya (pole position et record du tour en 2002) et Ralf Schumacher (pole position en 2003, victoire en 2001). Au programme : essais libres le vendredi 11; essais libres et qualifications, le samedi 12 et course à Midi 30, le dimanche 13 juin.

Avec ses accents d’autrefois, le grondement sourd des V8 ou le sifflement plus aigu des 12 cylindres, le Grand Prix historique offrira un émouvant voyage dans le temps avec arrêt sur les années 1968 à 1983. Pilotées jadis par les Stewart, Scheckter, Andretti, Hulme, Hunt, Jones, Rosberg ou Gilles Villeneuve, ces F1 ont fait vibrer des milliers de spectateurs sur les plus prestigieux circuits du monde. Plus de vingt voitures en piste, des noms magiques : Brabham, Lotus, March, Shadow, Tyrrell, et évidemment Ferrari, McLaren, Williams. En plus, vous aurez le privilège d’approcher ces bolides et de mieux connaître leur histoire en visitant le paddock des courses de soutien. Au programme : essais libres et qualifications le vendredi 11; course le samedi 12 juin.

Réservée à de jeunes pilotes âgés de 16 à 23 ans, cette nouvelle série monotype fait son entrée en Amérique du Nord après ses succès en Allemagne et en Asie. Superbes monoplaces conçues pour développer la qualité du pilotage et la finesse de la mise au point. Véritable pépinière de talents, cette série a déjà servi de tremplin à deux membres du plateau de la F1 : Ralf Schumacher (Williams) et Christian Klien (Jaguar). Lutte vive à prévoir alors que ces jeunes loups n’auront qu’un objectif : briller devant le public montréalais, les journalistes internationaux et les décideurs de la Formule 1. Au programme : essais libres et qualifications le vendredi 11; course 1 le samedi 12; course 2 le dimanche 13 juin.

Très appréciée des spectateurs du Grand Prix du Canada de 1978 à 1990, cette série monotype retrouvera le circuit Gilles-Villeneuve après une absence de 14 années. Au programme : freinages tardifs, bousculades et virages sur deux roues! Un plateau relevé avec assurément une légende de ce championnat : Normand Boyer. Inscrit pour la première fois en 1985, il a été de toutes éditions du challenge Honda-Michelin et a remporté trois championnats (1987, 1990, 1991). À Montréal, une victoire (1989) et plusieurs podiums (2e en 1986, 3e en 1987, 2e en 1990) complètent son palmarès. Sa grande expérience lui permettra-t-elle de tenir tête à une nouvelle génération? Au programme : essais libres le vendredi 11; qualifications et course le samedi 12 juin.

Fidèle à cette tradition remontant aux origines du sport automobile, le challenge Ferrari oppose des pilotes amateurs au volant de leurs propres machines. Ils sont en piste pour la passion de la vitesse et la gloire du sport. Pas de célébrités ou de pilotes professionnels dans ce challenge. Plutôt un groupe de « Gentlemen Drivers », ayant pour signe particulier le plaisir de pousser à fond leurs superbes bolides, ces formidables bêtes de course que sont les Ferrari 360 Modena.
Au programme : essais libres le vendredi 11; qualifications le samedi 12 et course le dimanche 13 juin.

With this first issue of GRAND PRIX INFO, I am pleased to announce the complete sporting program for the 2004 Grand Prix of Canada. As you will note, this program is made to measure for motor racing fans like you. Along with practice and qualifying sessions, and the presentation of Round 8 of the 2004 Formula 1 World Championship, this year in Montreal you will also view a schedule of spectacular support events. Starting today, get into Grand Prix mode and enjoy the exhilarating atmosphere of our 2004 edition.

History shows: Positioned right in the middle of the calendar, the Grand Prix of Canada has often reopened the World Championship. With its demanding layout, both for drivers and their machines, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has over the years produced many surprises. Even though Michael Schumacher feels greatly at ease, heroes of past editions have included Fernando Alonso (lap record in 2003), Juan Pablo Montoya (pole position and lap record in 2002) and Ralf Schumacher (pole position in 2003, win in 2001). On the program: practice on Friday the 11th; practice and qualifying on Saturday the 12th and race at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 13.

With its emphasis on years gone by, the deafening roar of the V8 or the high-pitched whine of the 12 cylinder engines, Historic Grand Prix offers a moving journey through time with a stop in the era 1968 to 1983. Formerly driven by the likes of Stewart, Scheckter, Andretti, Hulme, Hunt, Jones, Rosberg or Gilles Villeneuve, these F1 cars have thrilled thousands of spectators on some of the most prestigious circuits in the world. More than 20 cars will be on track, with special names such as: Brabham, Lotus, March, Shadow, Tyrrell, and of course Ferrari, McLaren and Williams. Moreover, you will have the privilege of enjoying an up-close look at the cars as well as learn more about their history by visiting the support paddock. On the program: practice and qualifying on Friday the 11th; race on Saturday, June 12.

Exclusively for young drivers aged 16 to 23, this spec series makes its entry in North America after success in both Germany and Asia. Comprised of superb single-seater cars designed to develop driving and set-up skills. A veritable breeding ground for talent, the series has served as a springboard to two drivers on the F1 scene: Ralf Schumacher (Williams) and Christian Klien (Jaguar). A serious battle is anticipated among these young guns who have but one objective: shine before the Montreal public, international journalists and the decision makers in F1. On the program: practice and qualifying on Friday the 11th; Race 1 on Saturday the 12th; Race 2 on Sunday, June 13.

Greatly appreciated by spectators at the Grand Prix of Canada from 1978 to 1990, this spec series returns to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve after a 14-year absence. On the program: late braking, lots of bumping, and corners taken on two wheels! A field certainly boosted with a legend of the Championship: Normand Boyer. Registered for the first time in 1985, he competed in all editions of the Honda-Michelin Challenge, winning three Championship titles (1987, 1990, 1991). In Montreal, a win (1989) and several podiums (2nd in 1986, 3rd in 1987, 2nd in 1990) complete his honours. Will his vast experience allow him to lead this new generation? On the program: practice Friday the 11th; qualifying and race on Saturday, June 12.

Loyal to a tradition that stems from the origins of motorsport, the Ferrari Challenge is a contest among drivers who race their own cars and who are on track with a passion for speed, and the glory of sport. No celebrities or professional drivers in this challenge. More a field of “Gentlemen Drivers” who enjoy pushing their magnificent machines, the Ferrari 360 Modena, to their limits. On the program: practice on Friday the 11th; qualifying on Saturday the 12th, and race on Sunday, June 13.
